First lady Michelle Obama made a brief visit to former South African President Nelson Mandela on Tuesday.

The 92-year-old is still revered in South Africa for his role in ending apartheid and unifying blacks and whites.

He received Obama at his home in Houghton for 20 minutes in spite of his frail condition.

During the visit, Obama was shown letters, photos and desk calendars from Mandela’s 27 years in prison.

Mandela also signed a copy of a book of his quotations for the first lady, who is making a weeklong goodwill visit to South Africa and Botswana along with her daughters and other close relatives.

Her schedule includes a visit to Robben Island, where Mandela was imprisoned, and a medical clinic in Gaborone, Botswana.

Today, Obama is delivering a keynote address at the Young African Women Leaders Forum at the Regina Mundi Church in Soweto.

The Catholic church served as a meeting place for the resistance movement during the years of apartheid.
